About
Inspired by Ursitoarele of Romanian folklore and their equivalent in Greek mythology, The Fates that weave the thread of human life, these images of which colour pallets form the Romanian Flag discuss how tradition is being glorified against more progressive views of the youth which are often shut down by arguing that tradition is the only way of repairing our country.
Embodying this conservative argument, this series hints that in a way the fate of the future generations has already been decided for them without their say in it.
In Romanian folklore, ursitoarele are known to come on the third day after a baby is born and choose how their life will play out. In this series, they are depicted in a traditional Romanian house, threading the life of three newborns whose fate is surrounded by bad omens lurking in the shadows.
The traditional Romanian costumes they wear, mature with each character, reminiscent of many Greek depictions of The Fates in which Klotho(The Spinner) is the youngest, Lachesis (The Measurer) is the middle sister and Atropos (The Inevitable/Death) is the eldest.
The environment created in 3D juxtaposing the scans of old physical photos from my Romanian grandmother means to create a contrast between the digital and analogue, old and new, tradition and the modern world and painting these images living in limbo. Not moving back in time and neither looking into the future.
